Review of César Vallejo’s Trilce
William Rowe and Helen Dimos’s NYRB edition of César Vallejo’s Trilce is both a major new translation and a revival of the gloss. Its music and intensity are inseparable from those glosses, which are central to the edition’s poetics. They are not explanatory scaffolding, but a goad to hone our attention into specific frequencies of Vallejo’s fractured, volatile, and beautiful poems.
